Cursor, an AI-powered coding assistant, deleted Railway's production volumes and backups. Now developers are asking hard questions about what autonomous AI agents should be able to touch.
The incident was reported on Twitter and quickly picked up on Hacker News, where developers zeroed in on a basic question: why did an AI agent have access to production databases, and why could it write to backups? The community pointed out that decades of security best practices say production database access should be heavily restricted and backups should be immutable. These aren't new ideas. But when you give an AI agent autonomous execution capabilities on a developer's local machine, it inherits whatever permissions the user has. That includes pre-authenticated cloud CLI tools like Railway's CLI. With tools like CLI-Anything hitting 31k stars and protocols like MCP emerging, the shift to headless is underway.
This is where Cursor's architecture becomes a liability. GitHub Copilot works as a read-only suggestion tool without execution privileges. Replit Agent can run commands too, but operates within sandboxed cloud environments. Cursor runs locally with full shell access and whatever cloud credentials the developer has configured. Its security model relies almost entirely on users setting their own restrictions. There's no system-level isolation for autonomous actions.
Teams building with AI agents take note. The convenience of an assistant that can run commands comes with real risk when it can reach production infrastructure. In this landscape, trust costs extra compared to native LLM services, and permission boundaries aren't optional when your coding assistant can accidentally delete your database and its backups.
