Bitcoin miners are bleeding cash. Checkonchain's difficulty regression model pegs average production costs at $88,000 per coin, while bitcoin trades around $69,200. That's a 21% loss on every block. Oil above $100 per barrel and the closure of the Strait of Hormuz keep pushing electricity costs up. Network difficulty dropped 7.76% on Saturday to 133.79 trillion, and hashrate has retreated to roughly 920 EH/s, well below 2025's 1 zetahash record. Miners are unplugging inefficient hardware and selling coins to fund operations.
Some see an escape route in AI compute. Platforms like Anthropic's Managed Agents offer a way to build and deploy cloud-hosted AI agents at scale. Marathon Digital and Cipher Mining have been building data center capacity alongside their mining operations. CoreWeave and Hut 8 moved earlier, converting crypto mining facilities into GPU infrastructure for AI workloads. The appeal is straightforward: contract-based revenue instead of depending on bitcoin's price.
But the shift is harder than press releases suggest. Bitcoin mining uses low-density power distribution, around 5 to 10 kilowatts per rack, with air cooling. AI clusters running NVIDIA H100s need 40 to 100 kilowatts per rack and direct-to-chip liquid cooling. You can't just swap ASICs for GPUs and call it done. Transformers, switchgear, and cooling infrastructure all need replacing. Mining sites were also deliberately built in remote areas with cheap electricity, far from the high-bandwidth fiber connections AI training demands.
Conversion matters for AI compute supply. Miners already control secured power contracts and land, which take years to obtain. Few new entrants building from scratch can say the same. But whether miners can capitalize on this depends on how much capital they can raise while their core business stays unprofitable. Luxor's data puts hashprice at $33.30 per petahash per day, near breakeven for most machines. The AI ambitions remain boxed in by the same financial pressure that pushed miners to diversify in the first place.
